To test the authenticity of the version provided by the families of the two teenage girls allegedly raped and murdered in Badaun in May, CBI on Monday sought the district court’s permission for conducting polygraph (lie detector) tests on the victims’ fathers and two other relatives.

The court will hear the agency’s request on Tuesday. The agency’s move indicates that it seeks to examine a few purported inconsistencies in the family’s narrative, including the chain of events, said a CBI source. The source, however, clarified that its move should not be seen as doubting of the victims’ families’ version but as an imperative to develop a flawless case against the accused by testing it. Although the test is not admissible evidence during trial it does helps the agency to pick leads for their investigation.

“Among the four to be put through the lie detector test, two are the fathers of the two victims who were cousins, while the other two are close relatives who gave witness testimonies,” said the source. The source said the consent of the four persons has already been taken by the agency.

The court has already granted permission to the agency for conducting narco, brain mapping and lie detector tests on five accused in the case including three brothers Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Yadav, Urvesh Yadav as well as constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav.

The CBI team that landed in Badaun on June 13 had grilled the family members of the deceased, locals, as well as the families of the accused. It also recorded the statement of Baburam, the case’s eyewitness.
