A bag containing hand grenades and another substance suspected to be an explosive material were found floating in the sea off Chandrapadi coast near Porayar in the district on Sunday.
When Manickasamy, a fisherman of the area and two of his sons, ventured out into the sea for fishing early this morning, they found a green colour bag floating. They examined the bag and found hand grenades and another material in it.
They gave the bag to Chandrapadi VAO, who in turn alerted Porayar police.
Police and other officials rushed to the spot. Bomb squads and sniffer dogs also arrived from Nagapittnam and examined the materials.
Later, speaking to PTI, Superintendent of Police said the box contained 153 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, food stuff (chocolates, biscuits and other eatables), a rain coat, a khaki uniform and other materials. It also contained a mystery substance suspected to be an explosive material, he said.
Another expert bomb squad from Tiruchirapali would arrive to analyse the mystery substance. "Investigation is on and further details would be available only after detailed investigation," the SP added.
