The process of repatriating the bodies of the 16 Indian workers killed in a fire in Bahrain on Sunday is expected to start on Monday night.

The Indian embassy in Bahrain was to send the bodies by Gulf Air flights on the Bahrain-Muscat-Chennai route, an official of the ministry of overseas Indian affairs (MOIA) said.

All the deceased hailed from Tamil Nadu. They were working as labourers in the Bahraini firm Royal Tower Construction Company.

The fire broke out after a short circuit in a three-storey labour camp at Al Qudaibiya locality in the Bahraini capital Manama in the early hours of Sunday. Eleven labourers were injured in the accident.

According to the MOIA official, the Tamil Nadu chief secretary was in touch with the families of those deceased.

Till now, the families of six victims have sought repatriation of the bodies, the official said.
