The death toll in the chimney collapse incident at a BALCO site in Korba district rose to 26 today even as rescue operations were on to pull out those trapped in the debris.
"Total 26 bodies have been removed from the debris and 20 more are still feared trapped in the debris," Superintendent of Police Ratanlal Dangi told PTI.
Earlier, Korba police registered a case under IPC Sec 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against BALCO
management and GDCL company, which was entrusted with the responsibility of erecting the chimney.
Rescue operations to pull out those trapped in the debris are going on at war-footing and may continue for another day, Dangi added.
The mishap occurred yesterday when the chimney at the under-construction thermal power plant of Bharat Aluminium
Company Ltd caved in, killing the labourers on job and injuring several others.
Chief Minister Raman Singh visited the site today and asked the officials to expedite rescue operations.
Also, BALCO has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those killed in the accident.
