A day before the first phase of Bihar elections are scheduled to take place, the Grand Alliance on Sunday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled rally at Bhabua, Bihar, and said its live telecast would be a violation of the model code of conduct.

“The first and second phases of Bihar assembly are being held on October 12 and 16 respectively. Nearly one-third of the voters will cast their votes in 81 assembly constituencies across 16 districts of the state on these two days. We are apprehending that the Prime Minister will visit Bihar on those days for campaigning and his speeches will be telecast live by various news channels influencing almost one-third of the electorate of Bihar,” states the letter by the Grand Alliance to the EC.

Congress leader Ajay Maken said he requested the Election Commission to ban campaigning 48 hours before polling for the first phase.

JD(U) leader Pawan Verma, who was also part of the delegation, questioned the timing of Modi’s rally.

“The first phase of Bihar elections is tomorrow (Monday). Is it a coincidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his tour in the neighbouring area on the same day?” he asked.
