The district administration on Saturday ordered the closure of hookah bars by invoking Section 144 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) for the fourth time since February last year.

In October last year, the bars were banned following reports that high-level of nicotine was being served in the tobacco molasses served in these bars. Around 200 bars were operational in Gurgaon before a ban was imposed on them for the first time in February last.

"Section 144 of CrPC can be implemented for two months and after that bars can resume their business. But now with a fresh order being issued they will not be allowed to reopen," said a government official.

Gurgaon deputy commissioner PC Meena said that the operation of hookah bars has been prohibited in the entire district taking the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine into account.

The orders have been sent to the police and health departments for strict compliance. Besides, all other departments have been asked to enforce these orders in their respective areas. "Those found violating the orders will be dealt with strict legal action," the DC said.
