Operations at the city's IT sector, so far unaffected by bandhs, was badly disrupted with only 10 to 15 per cent of employees reporting for duty in response to the statewide shutdown called by various political parties over the Nandigram violence.

S Radhakrishnan, member of Salt Lake IT Committee, told PTI that attendance in various IT companies was thin due to the bandh.

While Wipro Technologies remained closed for the first time since it began its operation in 2003, another IT company, Tech Mahindra, shifted its BPO operations to Noida for the next 48 hours.

Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said that the state government should try to instill confidence among the workers by providing them with adequate security.

He said that disruptions at work took place everywhere and urged the government and political parties to ensure that willing workers were allowed to attend office.

"If that does not happen, then there is a serious cause for concern," Karnik said.
