The Bandra police have detained 103-odd couples from Bandra Reclamation and Bandstand promenade over the last three days for allegedly indulging in "indecent" activities. HT spoke to Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Bipin Bihari on the ongoing drive to clear Bandra of such "indecent couples".
Q: What does "indecency" actually mean according to the Mumbai police?
A: We don’t have anything personal against couples, but we do follow the provisions laid down in the Bombay Police Act. And whatever falls under Section 110 of the Act is termed obscene.
Q: Are couples a threat to the community? Have the police have limited their role to rounding up couples than concentrating on serious offences?
A: We are acting on residents; complaints. The prime role of the police is to help the public in general.
Q: If the detained couples were found indulging in obscene activities as per the Act, then why did the police call their parents to the police station to embarrass them?
A: Whatever that was going on at the Reclamation was shocking. We wanted the parents to be aware of what their teenagers were up to and not embarrass them. But in some cases, we had to call the parents as the couple could not pay the fine and they were required to act as surety.
