Four persons, who claimed to be members of a local football club in Bangladesh, were detained in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills after they failed to produce valid documents for entering the country, police said on Thursday.

The four, identified as Prashanto Hajong, Anando Hajong, Timmy Momin and Plato Marak, were held from Baghmara area in the district on Wednesday.

According to police, the group claimed that they were members of 'Barcelona' football club based at Netrakona district of Bangladesh. They said they had been participating in football tournaments in West Garo since the last six years, besides some competitions in Shillong, a police official said.

They had come to play in a local competition when they were caught, he added.
