Battered wife threatens immolation

MOTHER OF four, harassed by husband, Pushpa Gupta took her plaint to the streets today. She staged a sit-in outside Vidhan Bhawan demanding ?justice? and threatening self-immolation, considering she apparently ?cannot? go to the cops for help. Amarnath, her husband, who allegedly beats her up regularly, is a constable posted in Gorakhpur. Pushpa says, she?s been suffering for the last eight years because of her husband?s liquor addiction that has reduced the family to penury.

Liquor addiction takes toll on cop’s family

MOTHER OF four, harassed by husband, Pushpa Gupta took her plaint to the streets today. She staged a sit-in outside Vidhan Bhawan demanding “justice” and threatening self-immolation, considering she apparently “cannot” go to the cops for help. Amarnath, her husband, who allegedly beats her up regularly, is a constable posted in Gorakhpur.

Pushpa says, she’s been suffering for the last eight years because of her husband’s liquor addiction that has reduced the family to penury.

She says Amarnath is in debt after borrowing money from several money lenders and beats her up when she asks for money to run the household.

Pushpa alleged she had suffered silently till Amarnath attemptd to molest their 21-year-old daughter recently. Amarnath beat her up with a hockey stick when she tried to save her daughter.

Pushpa has been assured help by the State Women’s Commission chairperson Ranjana Bajpai and Gorakhpur Zone IG VK Verma.

Bajpai said the Gorakhpur SSP had reprimanded Amarnath several times but to no avail. Also, local members of Shakti Vahini, Anju Chaudhury and Shipra Srivastava, have assured a job to Pushpa and her daughter.
