TRAFFIC POLICEMEN engaged in verbal duels with ‘influential’ vehicle owners on the fifth day of the drive against beacons and hooters as well.

A Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Commission member entered into a fracas over a bid to remove a red beacon from his car. Moreover, a youth Pawan Mishra called up the Chief Minister’s OSD when policemen asked for the papers of an unnumbered Scorpio in which he was travelling.

The drive on Sunday was conducted at Gandhi Setu in the presence of the CO and the RTO Gangaphal.

Circle officer RN Singh had to face embarrassment when some youths travelling in a red beacon-fitted car of the Unnao zila panchayat chairman Jyoti Prakash ignored the official’s queries. Instead, they continued enjoying the latest songs on the music system. One of the youths identified himself as the son of the chairman. He tried to influence the CO when a traffic constable was removing the beacon.

Besides, SC/ST Commission member Shiv Prasad Sharma engaged in a heated exchange with the RTO when the latter ordered removal of a red beacon from his Tata Sumo (UP 30 A-5681). Sharma asked the RTO to show the government order which stated that a red beacon could not be used on his vehicle.

Nevertheless, the light was removed.

Similarly, a police gunner, travelling in a Scorpio without a registration number, snubbed traffic cops. The gunner, however, was admonished by the CO, Traffic, and a challan was slapped on the vehicle. Hooters and beacons were removed from four other vehicles. The drive was conducted at Hazratganj, the Polytechnic intersection and the outskirts, too.
