The special investigation team (SIT) probing the Sunanda Pushkar death case has questioned senior IPS officer Abhinav Kumar.

Kumar was the personal secretary of former Union minister Shashi Tharoor when Sunanda was found dead in mysterious circumstances at the Leela Palace Hotel in Delhi on January 17 last year. It was Kumar who had informed Atul Sood, the then SHO of Sarojini Nagar police station, about Sunanda’s death.

Sources told HT that Kumar was questioned hours before Tharoor was questioned (on Monday night) by the five-member SIT team at Vasant Vihar.

A police officer privy to the investigation said Kumar was questioned for over two hours by the SIT team. The SIT members particularly wanted to know what happened on the day of the incident and what did Kumar see after he reached suite number 345 of the hotel where Sunanda was found dead.

According to police sources, the SIT members asked around 50 questions to Kumar, most of which were related to the events that occurred before and after Sunanda’s death. He was asked about the person who had directed him to call the police besides questions like who informed him about Sunanda’s death and his location when he received that news. Kumar, in turn, supposedly has claimed that he was in Mumbai attending the shooting of Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate and received news about Sunanda being unwell as soon as he landed back in Delhi. He then rushed to the hotel before calling the police.

The other questions hovered around why Sunanda was not taken to a hospital after she was found unconscious.

Kumar is one of the key witnesses for the investigators as they try to unravel the mystery surrounding Sunanda’s death, which they are treating as a murder since January 1 this year.

Investigators, during Kumar’s questioning, are said to have gathered some important information pertaining to the case, on which they thought Tharoor’s explanation was a must. Hence, they immediately called Tharoor and questioned him on Kumar’s statements.

Meanwhile, the SIT has also found that Sunanda had gone out of the hotel, a day after she checked in on January 15 last year.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Twitter wrote, “Did Sunanda leave Leela 16th Jan night? Whose car, to meet whom, why & for how long? If I get confirmation I will tweet.”
