The women and child development ministry’s tableau focusing on the girl child in India will lead the tableaux parade on Republic Day.

Senior ministry officials said this would be the first time that the WCD ministry’s tableau would be part of the parade. The tableau will be themed around “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”, a key scheme of the ministry aimed at addressing female foeticide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the scheme on Thursday from Panipat, Haryana.

“The direction came from the Prime Minister’s Office. With the government’s thrust on improving the lot of girl child and showcasing women power in the country, the ministry was told that its tableau should revolve around these themes,” said an official who did not want to be quoted.

Sources said that showcasing women power, especially safety and education of girl child would be the leading theme of this year’s Republic Day parade. Going with the theme of women power, for the first time the Army, Navy and IAF will also be fielding an all women marching contingent.

In all, a total of 25 tableaux would participate in the parade, with 16 of them belonging to states and the union territories and nine from central ministries.
