Abhitej Singh Sandhu (27), grandnephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, was killed on Sunday in a motorcycle accident near Rampur, about 135 kilometres from Shimla.
On Saturday afternoon, Abhitej, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activist, was on his way back from a leisure trip to Kaza in Lahaul-Spiti district and approaching Maglad on National Highway-5 when his two-wheeler skidded during rough weather. “Three friends coming behind in a car found him lying on the road with head-and-rib injuries and moved him to the Rampur hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said a police officer, adding that a technical problem with the motorcycle’s gearbox when it was caught in a thunderstorm might have caused the accident.
A case of rash driving and endangering life has been registered. The body was handed over the family after autopsy and brought to his house at Phase 3B2 in Punjab’s SAS Nagar on Sunday evening. The cremation will be on Monday at Balongi in SAS Nagar district.
On June 9, 2015, Abhitej had come to an AAP rally in Shimla, where he was introduced formally to the public. His father, Abhay Sandhu, said: “My son was popular youth leader of the AAP and preparing to contest the Vidhan Sabha election in Punjab.”
Abhay Sandhu had contested the 2012 Punjab assembly elections as a candidate of Manpreet-Badal-led People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) but lost. Both his son and he had, later, dissociated self from the PPP and campaigned for the AAP. Abhitej had canvassed for the AAP in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal mourned Sandhu’s death in a tweet. Several AAP leaders visited the bereaved family to convey their condolences.
