Bhana to replace Simon Child in NZ side

india Updated: Feb 26, 2010 00:22 IST

New Zealand have named Priyesh Bhana, a player of Indian origin, to replace striker Simon Child, who pulled out of the World Cup citing security concerns. Bhana, who plays for North Harbour in the New Zealand Hockey League, has played 20 matches for the Black Sticks and will strengthen their attack.

Team manager Kevin Marr told HT that Bhana had joined the team on Wednesday night.

Bhana is not new to India as he was a member of the team that played in the four-nation Punjab Gold Cup in Chandigarh early last year.

The 25-year-old traces his roots to Bhavnagar in Gujarat and is one of the upcoming players of Indian origin in New Zealand.

New Zealand are in Pool A along with Germany, the Netherlands, Korea, Canada and Argentina.
