Sixty-five year old Jatav Kumar was the latest victim of crop damage in Madhya Pradesh. He committed suicide by setting himself on fire in Bhind, 502 km north from Bhopal, on Sunday. Police said that Jatav took the extreme step in his own fields.

The deceased’s family members said Jatav took his life lying on the pile of his damaged crop. He died on the spot. His son, Santosh Jatav, said that his father was under severe depression after their standing crops were destroyed due to the unseasonal rainfall and hailstorm in the state earlier this month.

Santosh said that the entire produce of mustard and wheat sown on 10 acres was spoilt as a result of which his father was under extreme depression for the last couple of weeks. “Though we heard that officials would conduct surveys to ascertain the extent of loss of farmers to calculate compensation, till now no one has come to our fields”, said Jatav.

Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ashok Bharadwaj said that a case has been registered to ascertain the circumstances that prompted Jatav to end his life.

Hail storm hit the state in the last week of Febraury and then again in the first week of March. Till date, 19 farmers have either taken their lives or died of heart attack and 10 others have attempted suicide after their crops were destroyed.
