Highlight Story

There was just eight feet between Gaganjeet Bhullar and his second straight Asian Tour title at the $300,000 Brunei Open. But the 21-year-old failed to read the line right and missed the birdie that sent him into a play-off at the Empire Hotel and Country Club where he lost to Aussie Darren Beck.

“I had a very good second shot on my 72nd hole but I clearly misread the line,” said Bhullar.

Bhullar was on the verge of becoming the first player to win back-to-back on the Asian Tour this season. C Muniyappa achieved his best Asian Tour result in tied 13th place after a one-over 72 in the final round.

Anirban Lahiri shot his best of the week to finish 18th with a total of seven-under 277. Chiragh Kumar finished 29th, while Gaurav Ghei ended 49th.

While Beck was as the leader at 13-under, it was actually veteran 53-year-old Ruangkit who was the leader at 14-under when the final group, including Bhullar, came for the final hole.

Bhullar needed a birdie to catch up with Boonchu, who in turn needed just a par to win, provided Bhullar missed. Both missed and the duo went into a play-off with Beck. Beck had started his final round tied 15th but finished with a six-under 65. After all three parred the first hole, Boonchu bogeyed the second. On the third, Beck birdied the ninth and Bhullar missed his birdie to finish tied second.
