Assam's cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika on Saturday unveiled his life-size statue on the banks of Dighalipukhuri lake here.
The Dada Saheb Phalke award winner unveiled the statue at a crowded function organised by All Assam Students' Union. AASU leaders would also felicitate him at a cultural function at Latasil playground in Guwahati on Sunday.
An emotional Hazarika told the gathering that he was overwhelmed by the love, respect and honour bestowed on him by the people of his state during his lifetime.
He praised sculptor Biren Singha for reflecting his personality and achievements in this work of art.
Hazarika was brought to the venue from his Nizarapar residence in a colourful and traditional procession led by seven decorated elephants and school children dancing and singing songs sung and composed by the maestro.
"The fibre glass statue has been installed at the site to attract all people passing by busy GNB Road," AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said.
"This is for the first time that a living legend unveiled his own statue. It is an historic occasion for the people of Assam. This is our tribute to the great personality whose contribution towards enrichment of Assamese culture is immense," he said.
