Big B wait ends in a fiasco

india Updated: Jan 16, 2007 02:48 IST

REPORTS THAT Amitabh Bachchan is arriving in Indore en route to Ujjain to seek Mauni Baba’s blessings in connection with the marriage of his son Abhishek Bachchan with Aishwariya Rai sent the media in Indore and Ujjain into a tizzy.

It was also reported that Amitabh’s friend and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was to accompany him. Journalists rushed to the Indore airport and kept waiting for Amitabh. In Ujjain too, media persons stayed put at the Mahakal temple and Mauni Baba’s ashram.

The media camped at the Indore airport from 1 a.m on Sunday night anticipating that Amitabh might come in a chartered flight since Ujjain does not have night-landing facility. Throughout the night, the media kept on contacting officials who kept saying that they did not have any information about the megastar.

Early in the morning there was a fresh twist to the  ‘news’ when it was said that while Amitabh Bachchan was not coming, Amar Singh, Abhishekh Bachchan, Aishwariya Rai and Sweta Nanda would land. But excitement died when around 8 am it became apparent that no one from the Bachchan’s family or Amar Singh’s family was coming to Indore.

The excitement followed a news channel report that after the engagement ceremony of Abhishek and Aishwarya at Mumbai, the Bachchan family was coming to Ujjain. Since the airport at Ujjain did not have night landing facility, the journalists thought that they would land at the Indore airport at night and then go to Ujjain by road.

While the media in Indore had to return empty-handed, those in Ujjain had some consolation in the sense that Amar Singh accompanied by his wife and kids arrived in a private jet and landed at the Datana airstrip. There was no one from the Bachchan family, much to everyone’s disappointment.

At the airstrip, Singh, who was mobbed by the media, expressed anger over the ‘baseless’ news of Amitabh Bachchan accompanying him to Ujjain. “There was no plan for any member of Bachchan family to visit Ujjain as they have nothing to do with the ritual for which I had come,” he said adding for good measure that Amitabh was not linked with the Mauni Baba ashram either. Amar Singh then went straight to the ashram and participated in the purna ahuti of Shatakshari Mahayagna.
