Shilpa Shetty is now Dr Shilpa Shetty. Leeds Metropolitan University, with 50,000 students on its rolls, conferred an honorary doctorate on her on Wednesday, in recognition of her “contribution to cultural diversity and good relations between the people of India and the United Kingdom”.
The university's vice chancellor Professor Simon presided over the ceremony which shown live on the big screen in Millennium Square in Leeds. “It was a surprise for me. I was really humbled and I accept it. I don't know how to react to it,” said Shetty. “To be given a doctorate is a huge, huge honour.” The university has earlier given similar honorary doctorates to Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Yash Chopra and civil aviation minister Praful Patel.
