A one-year-old girl was snatched from her father's lap and flung to death following a dispute over Rs 50 in a Bihar village on Sunday.

One of the four accused named in an FIR filed by the child's father has been arrested. The incident, which has sent shock waves across the state, took place at Sawath village in Kaimur district of western Bihar.

The incident came around a month after a person and his two brothers allegedly assaulted a Dalit couple and threw their nine-month-old daughter into a river over an unpaid loan of Rs 500 in Kaimur, a district fraught with poverty and unemployment.

When asked about the Sawath incident, district superintendent of police (SP) Ratnamani Sanjeev said, "We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause behind the child's death."

The complaint filed by the girl's father, Doma Musahar, alleged that the child was killed during an altercation between his son-in-law, Dharmendra Musahar, and one Santosh Musahar.

According to Doma's FIR, Dharmendra and Santosh worked as labourers at a brick kiln in Cheharian village, and had a dispute over the distribution of wage money.

"Santosh had accused Dharmendra of grabbing Rs 50 from his (Santosh's) share of wages," Doma said in his complaint.

Doma alleged Santosh and three others barged into the family's hut on Sunday evening, and abused Dharmendra.

During the altercation, Santosh allegedly snatched the child from Doma's arms and threw her to the ground.
