Inspired by a Bollywood horror movie, a minor girl immolated herself “to become a ghost and take revenge from her sisters” in Muzaffarpur on Friday evening.

Ten-year-old Mona (name changed), a resident of Ahiapur locality here, set herself on fire after pouring kerosene to become a ghost and vex her two elder sisters, who allegedly used to beat her frequently.

The matter came to the light when Mona was taken to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) here with 90% burn injuries on Friday evening. She succumbed to her injuries after battling for life for six hours.

In her statement before she died, Mona said she was fed up with the humiliation she had been facing for nearly two years. “I am a student of Class 4 in a government middle school. I am third among four sisters. My two elder sisters always beat me up without any fault. Whenever I tried to resist them, they used to become more violent. I brought the matter to my parents’ notice on many occasions. But they did not take any action,” she said.

Mona said she had recently watched a movie in which a female character immolated herself and took revenge from her tormentors after becoming a ghost. “This inspired me to take the extreme step,” she added. She was, however, not able to name the movie.

Family members said they came to know about the incident only when some passersby raised an alarm after seeing a girl in flames. “We took her to SKMCH, where she succumbed to her injuries despite doctors’ efforts to save her,” they added.

Ahiapur police station SHO Chitaranjan Thakur said an FIR had been lodged in connection with the incident. “We are investigating the matter,” he said.

Mona’s father said he had never thought his daughter would take such drastic step. “Mona had complained to me on a couple of occasions. But I never took the quarrel among sisters so seriously,” he said.
