Bihar legislators will now get a pay package of approximately Rs one lakh per month from April 1.

Making an announcement to this effect in the state assembly on Wednesday, chief minister Nitish Kumar said that the state government had revised the salary structure of legislators. "After successful completion of the month-long budget session of the state legislature, I am happy to announce that the government has revised the pay and perks of the legislators and the new pay package would come into force from April 1", he said.

According to official sources, the new salary structure of the legislators is likely to be approved by the state cabinet on Thursday.

As per the new pay structure, the lawmakers will get a basic salary of over Rs 25,000 instead of the previous Rs 8000 per month. The daily allowance of the legislators will be enhanced to Rs 1000 from the existing Rs 500 while the area allowance will go up to Rs 25,000 from the previous Rs 12,000 per month. The stationary allowance will be increased to Rs 5000 from Rs 2000 per month. The legislators will also get Rs 15,000 per month for assistants instead of Rs 10,000 earlier.

There is good news for the former legislators, as their pension amount has been enhanced to Rs 15,000 per month from the existing pension of Rs 6000. The legislators will also get one-time payment of Rs 50,000 for furniture. The limit of traveling coupons has been raised to Rs 2 lakh from the existing Rs 1.50 lakh and their vehicle loan limit to Rs 8 lakh against the present limit of Rs 5 lakh.

There are altogether 318 legislators in Bihar including 243 MLAs and 75 MLCs. The new salary structure would incur an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 33.97 crore to the state exchequer.

The government had set up a three-member committee headed by parliamentary affairs minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav to decide the new pay and perks of the legislators. The other two members were HRD minister P K Shahi and road construction minister Nand Kishore Yadav. The committee has already given final shape to the salary-hike proposals.
