KEEPING IN view the number of misconceptions about avian influenza (bird flu), the Veterinary Department of the State Government would be conducting awareness camps at development block level during month of January. This decision was taken at the concluding function of the two-day workshop on the disease organised at the Academy of Administration here.

The experts at the workshop were unanimous in their view that prior preventive action plan and initiatives and awareness creation can help in mitigating the fear of bird flu among the common people. The training workshop for Veterinary, Forest, Fisheries and Irrigation departments saw participation of about 200 officials.

Assistant commissioner of the Western Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory Dr M Ourandhkar conducted the training. He gave general information about bird flu, the preventive measures and the details of the steps taken during the bird flu outbreak in Maharashtra early this year.

Assistant veterinary surgeon of High Security Animal Disease Laboratory Dr S K Shrivastava gave details of the surveillance plan prepared for bird flu control and also the details of the status on samples collected for testing from various districts. Dr Jayant Tapase gave information on way to collect samples, their preservation and safe transport.

Dr T Lokhande and Dr S K Shrivastava also spoke on ways of collecting blood, droppings samples and swabs.
