Hemendra Chandra Singh, Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD's) Lok Sabha member from Kandhamal, passed away on early Friday morning at a private nursing home in Bhubaneswar. He was 47.

Singh is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

A scion of the royal family of Nayagarh, Singh had been admitted in AMRI Hospital since August 30 after he suffered a heart stroke. He was put on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the hospital, but slipped into coma on Thursday after developing multiple complications.

Singh died an hour past midnight (1.05am) on Friday due to heart failure and septicemia, doctors said.

Singh was elected to Parliament in the last general elections. A former Congressman, he had joined the BJD in February before the elections. He had defeated veteran Congress leader Harihar Karan by 1.81 lakh votes to win the Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat.
