BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday called Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a “nightwatchman and a stop gap arrangement for the heir apparent of the preferred family in power.”

Speaking during the debate on Presidential address in Rajya Sabha, he asked, “how can the Prime Minister command authority — political and moral — to provide the kind of leadership required in a democracy, to lead the country”?

“Prime Minister,” he said, has “failed to provide the leadership as he is not the natural leader of the alliance or the party, and this one weakness has plagued this government right from the beginning.”

The Presidential address does not give direction to the country as to how to contain the crises facing the country’s economy and security, he added.

CPM leader Brinda Karat, expressing her disappointment with the Presidential address said, “it’s like a poor election speech.”

The government has shown contempt for Parliament by bypassing it on important issues, and ignoring the recommendations of parliamentary standing committees.

Attacking the government on inflation, she said the price rise was because of the policies of the Centre.
