The Assam BJP on Tuesday urged the Election Commission to strengthen security of the EVMs kept at a stadium in Amingaon as the party was afraid that the ruling Congress could doctor the machines kept under "inadequate" security.

EVMs from Chaygaon, Boko, Plashbari and Hajo assembly segments under the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency are kept in a strong room inside the Rajiv Gadhi Indoor Stadium at Amingaon in the outskirts of the city.

"The strong room is not safe and has many loopholes from the security point of view", BJP leader and combined AGP-BJP candidate for the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat Bijoya Chakravarty told reporters in Guwahati on Tuesday.

"Going by the lack of security and easy access to the strong room, there is every possibility that the ruling Congress would take advantage and attempt to rig", she said after visiting the strong room.

The stadium has suffered extensive damage during a hailstorm on Saturday and is vulnerable, Chakravarty said adding that the party has urged the EC and the state Chief Electoral Officer to take steps to enhance security there.
