The ruling BJP appears to be leaving no stone unturned to ensure the party repeats its performance of 2008 during the upcoming assembly elections. The party has ensured the leaders and workers who would be campaigning in Bastar district should get life insurance cover.

The BJP won 11 of the twelve seats of Bastar division that emerged crucial for the party in forming the government in 2008.

The latest move by the Bastar unit of BJP is seen as a fallout of the audacious Maoist attack at Darbha’s Jiram valley on May 25 that killed 30 persons including twenty Congress men.

The BJP got over 200 party cadres insured having a risk cover of Rs 5 lakh each.

“Unless we don’t inculcate the feelings of safety and security among our party men how can we expect them to work zealously during the poll campaign. Our initiative will boost the morale of the party workers in the hyper-sensitive areas where even we had to think twice while venturing out in the remote areas”, the BJP legislator of Jagdalpur Santosh Bafna told Hindustan Times.

He hoped that his unique initiative would soon be followed by other parties too.

However, the BJP’s move has given the opposition Congress another chance to target the Raman Singh government for its failure to check the Maoist problem in Chhattisgarh.

“The BJP getting the life of their workers insured clearly suggest how the things have turned from bad to worse in Bastar during the Raman raj. Now the BJP activists are hesitant to work for the party in these areas. It further exposes the failure of the government to ensure security of the people”, said Bhujit Doshi, member of research and social media department of Congress.

This is first initiative of its kind by any political party in Chhattisgarh where as many as 18 districts of the 27 have the presence of Maoists.

In the Darbha attack a chunk of top leadership of the Congress was wiped off. The Congress party claimed that the Maoist menace during the last ten years has increased by ten folds.
