A BJP leader has claimed he has a CD that can shed light on why Income-Tax officer Ujjawal Choudhary was moved out of the process of investigating money laundering charges against former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda.

Former Jamshedpur (West) MLA and BJP leader Saryu Rai said on Sunday he would release the CD’s contents in a few days. Koda is in jail on corruption charges.

The CD is said to contain statements of an alleged Mumbai-based hawala dealer, Manoj Punamia, who is facing corruption charges in the cases in which Koda is involved.

“I am going through it (CD). It is about a conversation Punamia had with his associates in November last year about how difficult it was proving to placate Income-Tax Director (Investigation, Patna) Ujjawal Choudhary,” Rai said.

Rai alleged that Choudhary was shifted because there was evidence that politicians other than Koda were involved. “One of them is in the Jharkhand government (in which the BJP is a coalition partner),” Rai said.

Choudhary was leading the probe into the Koda affair and has been shifted out of the investigation process.

Choudhary said on the phone: “The next officer (taking over) is very competent.”
