Senior BJP leader and former Union Law Minister Jana Krishnamurthy died at a hospital in Chennai on Tuesday following prolonged illness.

He was 79. The BJP leader is survived by wife, two sons and three daughters.

Krishnamurthy, who was the BJP national president between 2001 to 2002, was undergoing treatment for kidney failure for about two months.

Senior BJP leader LK Advani visited the hospital and enquired about his health during his visit to Tamil Nadu last week, party sources said.

The last rites will take place on Wednesday.

BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the funeral, the sources added.

Born in Madurai in 1928, Krishnamurthy entered politics after an active stint in the RSS. He was a member of the Jan Sangh, the previous avatar of BJP and had cast his lot with the BJP after the split in the Janata Party in 1979.

Krishnamurthy, affectionately called Jana by his friends for his long association with the Jan Sangh, became a minister in the Vajpayee cabinet in 2003.

He became the BJP president in 2001, the first person from Tamil Nadu to rise to that position.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and was a member of the upper house till he breathed his last.

Krishnamurthy was unconscious from the past 20 days due to a brain haemorrhage. He was admitted to a private hospital about 45 days back for a kidney problem.
