A local BJP leader has been shot dead by unidentified persons in a nearby town, police said on Wednesday.

Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) district vice president, Gokul Singh Sisodia, 30, was killed last night at Betma, about 25 km from here, when some persons travelling in a van fired at him indiscriminately after surrounding his car.

Sisodia, who received serious bullet injuries in the incident, was rushed to Indore for treatment but he succumbed to his injuries on the way, they said.

Meanwhile, police have detained two persons in connection with Sisodia's killing.

One of them was identified as Kailash Balai and was found in a wounded condition and it was suspected that Balai may have been the main shooter in the murder, Additional Superintendent of Police Satendra Shukla told PTI.

Efforts were on to find out how Balai sustained injuries, the ASP said adding further probe in the matter was on.

It is suspected that the killing was related to some land controversy, Shukla said.
