Caste lines blurred in Gautam Buddha Nagar constituency on Friday as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Dr Mahesh Sharma emerged victorious riding high on votes secured from all communities.
BJP’s Mahesh Sharma bagged the seat by securing 2,58,871 votes, ahead of SP candidate Narendra Bhati who managed to notch 3,03,180 votes. The BSP candidate Satish Kumar Awana polled 1,82,976 votes and ended third in the race.
A elated Sharma said corruption and policing would be his top priority.
“There are 60-70 lakh Muslim voters in the Noida segment. But the SP candidate Narendra Bhati only got 11, 000 votes. That means Muslims, Gujjars and Yadavs did not vote for SP, which is the ruling party in UP,” confessed a SP worker.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on the other hand, failed to connect with people in Jewar, Dadri, and Khurja and managed just a handful of votes. The AAP, however, managed to corner a large chunk of votes in Noida and stayed ahead of the SP and the BSP.
Industrialists and realtors cheered BJP’s victory in Gautam Buddha Nagar as a stable government would create a positive sentiment, they claimed.
“Home-buyers are expecting reduction in home loans and rationalisation in real estate pricing. We expect benefit for buyers in affordable and mid-income projects. A new government will bring positive news for buyers as well as realtors,” said P Sahel, vice chairman of Lotus Greens, a developer.
“Noida gave `14,700 crore revenue in 2013-14 to UP, highest among all cities. The small and large scale industries, however, are facing a survival threat due to poor power supply and the deteriorating law and order. A new government will save the industries,” said Vipin Malhan president of Noida entrepreneur association (NEA).
The SP, BSP and AAP candidates chose to stay put in Bulandshahr, away from Noida, since afternoon as soon as news of BJP taking a lead started to trickle in. “People want good governance, development and better policing. Our government will fulfil the people’s aspirations,” said an elated Dr Mahesh Sharma.
