The pending reshuffle in the BJP is likely to witness young leaders such as Poonam Mahajan, Anurag Thakur and Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayavargiya getting prominent positions.

Mahajan, daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, is likely to replace Thakur as BJP’s youth wing chief. Mahajan is at present a BJP secretary.

The BJP had been looking for an important role for Mahajan after she got elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from Mumbai. Thakur may replace JP Nadda, who is now the Union health minister, as the party general secretary. Party sources, however, say that West Delhi MP Parvesh Sahib Singh, son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, is also a contender for the post.

BJP president Amit Shah is expected to induct more than half a dozen new faces in the party’s team of national office bearers anytime after January 14. An expansion of BJP’s top team is due with five office bearers becoming union ministers and one taking over as a chief minister.

The BJP’s national team can have a maximum of 13 vice-presidents, nine general secretaries and 15 secretaries. “Going by the party’s ‘one-man-one-post’ principle, they (union ministers) will have to be replaced. Some discussion has taken place and an announcement could be made soon,” a senior BJP leader said.

Vijayavargiya, who helped the party score a win in Haryana for the first time, is likely to be appointed as general secretary. The party may also appoint former Karnataka deputy CM R Ashok as another general secretary.

Former Rajya Sabha member Om Mathur, who spearheaded the party campaign in Maharashtra, is also being considered for the general secretary’s post. However, Mathur is said to be reluctant to take up an organisational position.
