Vouching for Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s honesty, BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad on Saturday said that it was unthinkable for him to doubt her credentials as he has known her for over two decades. “I cannot imagine, in my wildest of dreams, that Mamatadi is dishonest. I have known her for over two decades. I have family relations with her. She gives me ‘Bhai phota’ (a festival where sisters apply ‘tilak’ or foreheads of their brothers)” said Azad.
Azad, a Lok Sabha member, said that his late father former Bihar chief minister Bhagwat Jha Azad had very good personal relations with Mamata Banerjee.
His comment came in the midst of demands recently raised by some opposition leaders both from the state Congress and CPI(M) including CPI(M) leader Surya Kanta Mishra and Congress leader Abdul Mannan that Banerjee should also be interrogated in the Sardha scam in which some of her party leaders have been arrested by CBI and a summon has been issued to party general secretary Mukul Roy by the CBI to appear before the agency.
On the Saradha chit fund scam the BJP MP said, “In the past also it has been alleged by many. “It is matter of investigation. If anyone has doubts regarding CBI’s credentials they can go to court”. “We should respect our opposition. We should not make allegations without proof,” he added.
The BJP on Saturday distanced itself from Azad’s comments. BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said that Azad’s comments were his personal views. “What Azad has said about Banerjee and Saradha scam are his personal views, it is not the viewpoint of the BJP,” he said.
