The BJP on Saturday demanded that a CBI case be registered against former Foreign Minister K Natwar Singh in connection with alleged irregularities in the Oil-for-Food scam in Iraq pointed out by the Volcker Committee.
"Why is a case not being registered by the CBI against Natwar Singh and the Congress under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act? This will enable the CBI to send a letter of request to the Swiss authorities to unearth the money trail and discover the eventual beneficiaries," BJP spokesman Arun Jaitley said in a statement in Kolkata.
Jaitley demanded a statement from the government confirming or denying the existence of three letters and making their contents public.
Stating that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had initially defended his then Foreign Minister after publication of the Volcker report, Jaitley said, "the disclosure (by a private TV channel) leaves no alternative than to register a criminal case against the accused."
