The BJP would oppose the move of the Congress-led state government's proposal to build a ropeway between Palchan to Rohtang at Manali in Kullu district, which would directly affect the employment of local taxi operators.

This was stated by Kullu BJP president Govind Thakur while addressing mediapersons here on Friday.

“The state government has failed to represent the issue of people of Manali positively in front of the high court, which has put many people on the verge of unemployment,” he added.

He said the high court had banned old vehicles towards the Rohtang Pass and snow scooters were also declared illegal, which had affected the livelihood of many families associated with the business.

Lashing out at the Congress, Thakur said chief minister Virbhadra Singh had assured the taxi operators of Manali before the Mandi byelection that he would raise the issue of taxi operators again in the court; but no concrete steps had been taken so far.

He said if the state government wanted to build a ropeway at Kullu, it should be built between Palchan and Bhrigu, which is at more height as compared to Rohtang Pass.

He said the government should develop other parts of the district as tourist places, which would divert the tourist and reduce the traffic rush towards Rohtang Pass.
