One person was killed and five others were injured in a bomb explosion in the heart of the busy Imphal town on Monday, officials said.

The incident took place around 11:10am as business started at the betel leaf selling junction in the busy Thangal Bazar MG Avenue, located barely 100 metres from city police station in Imphal.

The five injured persons have been admitted to RIMS hospital while the body of the 28-year-old Naresh Sahani, a betel leaf seller, was sent to the mortuary for autopsy. All the injured men also sell betel leaves.

The injured men have been identified as 15-year-old Bikash Sahni, 26-year-old Sanjoy Sahni, 40-year-old Sanyal Sahni, 48-year-old Surender Sahni -- all of whom belong to Bihar -- and 48-year-old Leishangthem Jila alias Tomba from Thoubal Leishangthem village in Thoubal district.

The condiction of Jila, a milkman, is said to be serious.

A police team, led by inspector general of police Clay Khongsai and deputy inspector general of police IK Muivah, rushed to the site to look into the matter and registered a case for investigation.

"We cannot say much at the moment as investigation is going on," said Khongsai said adding it was an improvised explosive device blast.

Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh strongly condemned the blast.

After visiting the injured persons at RIMS hospital along with deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, MLA Ng Bijoy and DGP Manipur Saheed Ahmed, he assured that the state government will extend necessary financial help to the victims.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident as yet.

A similar bomb explosion occurred during Durga Puja celebrations at a nearby area in Imphal on October 1 wherein a dozen people were hurt.
