Suspected Ulfa militants triggered a blast near Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) headquarters on Monday in Guwahati even as three BSF troopers were killed in a militant attack in Kokrajhar district.
APCC general secretary Ranjan Borah and spokesman Medhi Alam Bora were among the four injured in the explosion. The blast occurred 10 feet from the main gate to Rajiv Bhaban (headquarters).
Assam DGP Sankar Prasad Barua, who had visited the blast site, said an IED had exploded. “This does not look like a grenade blast but an IED one.”
Immediately after the blast, United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) commander-in-chief Paresh Barua claimed responsibility for the attack. On February 19, Ulfa had sent an email in which it warned the Congress of dire consequences ahead of the elections for the alleged divisive tactics adopted by the party to divide Ulfa.
In the Kokrajhar case, BSF deputy commandant S. Pramod said the attack took place when they were returning to the camp after completing the day’s duty on the Indo-Bhutan border.
