as Sonia files nomination from ‘karmbhoomi’

AMID blessings and shower of petals from all around, Congress president Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers, calling the constituency her ‘karmbhoomi’ and declaring that she would surely get re-elected from this prestigious seat that had been her family’s traditional bastion.

“I will win again with people’s cooperation,” said Sonia while talking to mediapersons soon after filing four sets of nomination papers.

Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi stood by her side along with Robert Vadera as the returning officers administered oath to Sonia in Hindi.

Before filing her papers Sonia performed the traditional ‘havan’ and ‘puja’ at the Central Congress Office in the presence of octogenarian Pt Gaya Prasad Shukla, who once conducted election campaign for late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Chief priest Pt Radhey Shyam conducted the ‘puja’.

Soon after filing her papers Sonia went to the ancestral house of noted Islamic scholar late Ali Mian at ‘Takia’ on the outskirts of Rae Bareli city. A large number of people waited on the roadside and rooftops for Sonia there. Late Ali Mian’s family member Hazrat Bilal handed over some books to her. Rahul, Priyanka and other family members accompanied her there too.

Sonia followed the footsetps of Indira Gandhi by performing ‘havan’ and ‘pooja’ in the same manner as she did and visited late Ali Mian’s residence as her mother-in law-did in yesteryears. This was obvious when she recounted close association of her family with the constituency.

“Rae Bareli is really the ‘karmbhoomi’ of my family,” she said adding that “Indira Gandhi, Firoz Gandhi, her husband Rajiv Gandhi (from Amethi) have had close association with the city. When I am here I feel at home.”

Sonia appeared quite relaxed and confident. This may be because Rahul has been given the task of managing her election campaign this time.

The second person Imran had suffered minor injuries and was discharged after first aid.

According to reports, Imran and Kunwar Bal Rawat, resident of Madiyaon, were riding a motorcycle from Mohanlalganj to Lucknow. When they reached Kalli Paschim village near SGPGI, the vehicle collided with a tractor. Both were seriously injured and lay on the road, bleeding profusely.
