BMC conjures up a flyover dream

IT COULD prove to be not just a remedy for the bottleneck on one of the City’s major traffic arteries, but has all the makings of a picturesque tourist attraction.

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation proposes to build a gigantic flyover from Roshanpura Square to the Karbala junction on VIP Road, which would literally fly over the scenic Upper Lake.

The flyover is aimed at reducing traffic load on the Kamla Park over bridge, which is the sole link of the major part of New Bhopal to the old city, as well as the busy VIP Road. However, the project is still at a nascent stage and is still to get approvals under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The BMC had hired a Delhi-based consultant company, which has prepared nine concept designs for the construction of the flyover. Besides the finalisation of a design before completing other proceedings, the BMC would also need to acquire some private land for this project, which could create some disputes.

A recent study found that a four-lane bridge with a capacity of 3,600 passenger car unit (PCU) per hour from Roshanpura junction to VIP road would be needed to serve the traffic project for next 10 years. By 2015, the traffic from Roshanpura to Polytechnic Square and further from Polytechnic Square to VIP Road would, respectively, be 2,641 and 3,799 PCU. This traffic would take the route of this proposed corridor.

This would save time for people going from Roshanpura towards Koh-e-Fiza, Bairagarh, Indore, NH-12, Airport and Lalghati and a few parts of old city like Idgah Hills. In all the proposed designs, the over bridge would land on VIP Road after starting from Roshanpura and passing via Polytechnic and Kilol Park Square.

In a couple of designs, the restriction of vehicular movement from Shankar Dayal Sharma Square to proposed over bridge on VIP Road would be closed. In this case, the vehicles would be diverted from Shankar Dayal Sharma Square towards this over bridge through directional elevated loop, which would intersect the flyover.

In all proposed designs, the over bridge is directed to the VIP Road from Kilol Park through the Upper Lake. So, the people would also have an overview of the Upper Lake while driving. Besides, Kamla Park and Retghat dams would not be touched.

The pillars of the over bridge could not be constructed at these roads. The proposed over bridge is designed in a manner that it would also control the traffic of Banganga Square, Polytechnic Square, Kilol Park and Kamla Park crossings.

If all goes well, the proposed flyover project is likely to be implemented within next three years. Mayor Sunil Sood told the Hindustan Times that there could be some changes in these proposed plans.

He said that the actual implementation of the project would take about one and half years. He, however, said that the actual implementation would depend on various approvals under the JNNURM.
