Mystery shrouds the death of a teenaged girl and cousin whose bodies were recovered on Friday morning from Kurthal village in Muzaffarnagar district.
Sources said the police believe that the girl was raped and murdered, while her cousin was killed when he tried defending his sister. The bodies have been sent for a postmortem and two suspects have been taken into custody.
“The case will be lodged on the basis of the postmortem report,” said Jitendra Singh, the public relations officer of the Muzaffarnagar SSP.
The boy had gone missing on June 1 and his decomposed body was found in a well in Kurthal. His cousin sister’s body was recovered from a field nearby.
Sources said that the boy was supposed to get married on July 7. His family failed to register a case as he used to go out without telling anyone.
The girl’s family, however, had filed a case in the Budhana police station on July 4.
She allegedly had gone to the fields on some work, when she failed to return.
Her clothes were found in a spot close to the field.
The sources added that she had complained to her cousin, earlier, of how some village boys would follow her and try harassing her.
The police suspect they are involved in the case.
“The investigation is underway and we will probe every aspect of the case,” added Singh.
