Bodyguards, not naxals, killed DIG

india Updated: Oct 25, 2006 03:44 IST

Orissa Police on Tuesday made the astonishing disclosure that Deputy Inspector General of Police Jaswinder Singh was not killed by Naxalites but by his own personal security officers (PSOs).

The DIG had been travelling in the Naxalite stronghold of Rupkana in Rayagada district when he was shot dead. Police had initially blamed Naxalites for the killing.

On Tuesday, DGP Amarananda Patnaik said: "One of the PSOs says it was an accidental firing. But whether it was accidental or intentional, is being investigated."

Both the PSOs — Sasha Nanda Sarangi and Ashish Kumar Sarangi — have been arrested and charged with murder. It was the driver of the vehicle in which they were travelling, along with Singh, who first gave the game away to police during his interrogation.

Later, Sasha Nanda confessed that "accidental firing" claimed Singh's life. He said he had forgotten to lock the trigger of his 9mm pistol.
