Delhi Public School (DPS), Mathura Road, is the parent school of the DPS Society, which now has 130 schools under its name including 14 schools abroad. The Mathura Road branch was called Naveen Bharat when it was established in 1949 and was the only school of the DPS Society until 1972.
“The strong focus on academics has always been and continues to be the strength of the school,” said MI Hussain, principal of the school. “We encourage the spirit of competition in every field while ensuring the holistic development of the child.”
The school honours academic achievement through different scholarships and awards. From giving cash awards of R1 lakh to Class 10 and Class 12 toppers, the school has now started giving cash awards of R20,000, R15,000 and R10,000 to students coming first, second and third in the annual exams of each class.
However, the HT-C fore Survey shows that though the school is leading in sports and infrastructure, its academic rigour needs improvement.
“We keep in mind the natural aptitude and ability of the child and that’s why our teachers often work hard to design custom-made assignments for different students,” said Hussain. “We pay special attention to those who are unable to cope in class, and our teachers spend extra time with them every week to help them out.”
The school boasts of alumni such as Union corporate affairs minister Salman Khurshid, deputy chairman of planning commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Congress MP and industrialist Naveen Jindal, singer Shibani Kashyap, fashion designer Rohit Bal and actors Kabir Bedi and Mallika Sherawat.
“Shibani was given the title of ‘nightingale of the school’ and the school encouraged her singing,” said Parveen Kashyap, Shibani’s mother and former head of department of English at the school. “I would give credit to the school music teacher Jules Fernandes for honing her talent.”
