Despite the low bounce at the Bhama Shah Stadium, the penultimate day of the Elite Group B match between Uttar Pradesh and Punjab belonged to the bowlers.
After debutant seamer Navdeep Sidhu had snared three UP wickets to dismiss them for 362, the fast-bowling trio of RP Singh, Praveen Kumar and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar bowled well in the Punjab second innings.
Despite losing four wickets in quick succession, Punjab managed to post 127/4. Uday Kaul (47) and skipper Pankaj Dharmani (34) were at the crease with a 68-run fifth-wicket stand.
UP's 74-run first innings lead didn't seem daunting for Punjab, given the presence of Yuvraj Singh, Dharmani and Karan Goel. But, RP and Praveen used the pace of the wicket to leave the visitors struggling at 2/6 in the third over.
The quick wickets didn't make a difference to Yuvraj, who struck three consecutive boundaries off Praveen soon after taking guard and then hit a back drive off the same bowler in his next over.
Yuvraj (24) failed to keep the momentum going and edged a simple catch to wicketkeeper MA Khan off Bhuvaneshwar in the 10th over.
At tea, Punjab were 49/3, and soon after the break, Goel (10) was trapped leg before by Bhuvaneshwar. From there on, Kaul and Dharmani negotiated things well to see off the day.
Earlier, resuming at 221/5, UP managed to gain 74-run lead, thanks to a 62-ball 45 by Praveen. Bhuvaneshwar (35) and Praveen Gupta (23*) also made useful contributions.
Brief score: Punjab 288 & 127/4 (U Kaul 47 not out; B Kumar 2/20), UP 1st innings (M Kaif 58; N Sidhu 4/128, Rajwinder Singh 3/66)
