In a bizarre kidnap drama, a 11-year-old boy spent four days in the custody of his own cousin before being rescued by the Thane police on Tuesday night.

Police said Anukul Joag, 30, wanted Rs 30,000 to pay the security deposit to rent a house. So he kidnapped his father’s brother’s son Chaitanya on February 14. Anukul then called up his own father and demanded a ransom of Rs30,000 to release the boy.

When all efforts to reason with him failed, the family deposited the money in ICICI bank as he demanded. After he withdrew the money from the Kandivli branch, police trapped Anukul at Thane railway station and rescued Chaitanya who was with him on Tuesday night.

Police said Chaitanya father, a policeman had died four years ago. His mother Jyoti had got a job as a constable and was undergoing training.

On February 14, Anukul told Jyoti he would take Chaitanya to the mall while she went for a medical check up.

He never returned home and instead called up his father the next day and demanded Rs.30,000.

Anukul had fallen out with his father, a retired bank manager, over demands for money. He has been remanded in police custody till February 23.
