A 15-year-old boy, who teaches kids to raise money to finance his own education, “slapped to death” a class 6 student just a year younger than him, following an alleged dispute over the teaching skills of the part time tutor.

The incident took place late Wednesday evening at a tola (part of a larger village) falling under the mufassil police station of north Bihar district headquarters town of Begusarai.

“We got information about the happening around 8.30pm on Wednesday. An FIR in this connection has been registered by the deceased boy’s father”, said Begusarai mufassil police station SHO Rajesh Ranjan, confirming the incident.

He said raids were being conducted to nab the accused, who had gone missing with his entire family after the incident.

“We have been told the alleged assailant is only 15-years-old. We have to examine the relevant records to verify his age and ascertain if is really a minor”, Ranjan told HT Thursday afternoon.

If it was established that the accused was indeed a minor, he would be handed over the authorities concerned for being proceeded against under the provisions of the juvenile justice act, the SHO told HT Thursday afternoon.

Official sources said in his FIR, the deceased boy’s father had stated that the alleged assailant had “slapped to death” his son, 14, after an argument at the market place of his village.

“However, the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. The doctors who conducted the victim’s post mortem at the Begusarai sadar hospital have reserved their report. This suggests even they are not entirely sure how the boy died”, the SHO said.

Sources said the police were still trying to find out the exact cause of the dispute that prompted the tutor boy to assault the younger student.

However, a media report suggested the boy who died was slapped hard by the assailant when the victim intervened in a fight between the part time tutor and his cousin.

Sources said the fight had started after the cousin of the boy who died, who had exposure to the assailant’s skill as a tutor, told him his teaching “was not up to the mark”.

“This led to a fight between the two. The boy who died intervened on behalf of his younger cousin and ended up being assaulted by the angry tutor and under up dead”, said a local source.

The dead teenager was reportedly on his way to the village market to buy medicines for his ailing mother when the incident took place.

Officials said an associate of the accused boy tutor had also been named in the FIR filed by the victim’s father.
