Two teenaged sons of a policeman spun a story about being kidnapped in order to skip school but the plan backfired when the 'abducted' boy was found hiding behind their house.

"Lovepreet Singh, 14, and Jagdeep, 12, who are the sons of head constable Malkeet Singh posted at Faridkot, planned the kidnap drama to avoid going to school yesterday," Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Pratap said on Tuesday.

He said Jagdeep hid in the terrace of their house in Bhambha Landa village while his brother went to school in neighbouring Khal Ghurd village.

After a while, Lovepreet returned and told his mother that some unidentified men came in a car and kidnapped them from a bus stand.

He said he was making quite a fuss inside the car due to which the kidnappers threw him out, making a demand of Rs 10 lakh for Jagdeep's release.

The harried mother then raised an alarm and police swung into action.

"Wireless messages were flashed and police barricades set up in the district to look out for the abductors," Pratap said adding a villager spotted the boy hiding behind the house late in the evening and brought him home.

The boys finally admitted to fabricating the whole story as a ploy to skip school and were left off with a reprimand and a couple of hours of intensive police interrogation.
