Denying allegations of appeasing Sikh radicals for political gains, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday maintained that Lt Gen KS Brar (retd) was "commenting" on Blue Star Memorial issue without having adequate knowledge about the ground realities of the state.
"Brar has not visited Punjab in past several years. He lives in a fortress in Mumbai. Brar is unaware of the ground realities in Punjab. He should first visit the state before making comments," Badal, breaking his silence over controversy related to upcoming Blue Star memorial, said.
He was in Jalandhar to preside over third Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan at Lovely Professional University.
Badal said such statements could create a sense of insecurity and panic amongst the peace loving people of Punjab. "You tell me whether we are appeasing the Sikh radicals for political gains. Shiromani Akali Dal sacrificed several of its leaders and workers during terrorism. Why we will support the radicals?" he asserted.
The veteran Akali leader, however, was quick to clarify that he was not "criticizing" Brar but the latter was actually not aware of the ground realities.
Brar had been accusing the SAD (Badal) of supporting construction of Blue Star memorial on Harmandir sahib complex while terming the move have potential to revive terrorism.
The Akali veteran said the Congress was actually trying to create terrorism in Punjab by issuing provocative statements to disturb communal harmony keeping in view 2014 Lok Sabha polls. "Congress is habitual of racking up such issues out of frustration especially when they are out of power. The Congress had always been pursuing destructive agenda."
"The Congress defamed us through out the country to suit their interests. Again, they are raking up such issues for political gains," Badal said.
On SAD controlled SGPC honouring assassins of general AS Vaidya, Badal with folded hands said, "Oh Baba! Tusi maaf karo. Eho jehian gallan na karo, jide naal mahoul kharab hunda (Please don't raise those issues, which can vitiate state's atmosphere)." Thereafter, he preferred to leave the venue for lunch.
