An 18-year-old British volunteer with an NGO was raped by a taxi driver and his friend in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.
In her complaint, the girl said that she was sexually assaulted by the two men, Sunil (26) and Rakesh (28), when she was returning to her rented accommodation at Bandla village on the outskirts of Palampur. She said she had gone for shopping and when the taxi driver accompanied by another youth offered to drop her.
The men stopped the vehicle at an isolated area and assaulted her. Late at night they dropped her at Bandhla village.
The teenager then narrated the incident to an elderly British woman staying in the village, who accompanied her to the police station.
The police sent the teenager to a local government hospital for medical examination. Preliminary reports confirmed rape. Swab samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory.
Kangra SSP Atul Fulzele, who supervised the investigation, said both the accused have been picked up from Tashi Jong, where they were hiding at a friend’s house.
A case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC.
According to the police, the girl had arrived in Delhi on May 14 and had come to Palampur along with a few other British volunteers. The police have also contacted the British Embassy in Delhi.
