A 31-year-old British social worker was allegedly raped in the holy city of Rishikesh, the Uttarakhand police said on Saturday.
“The incident took place on March 21 and the first information report (FIR) was lodged on Saturday night,” Pushpak Jyoti, SP, Pauri district, told Hindustan Times on Sunday.
The woman filed three complaints naming two persons - a foreigner and an Indian from Mumbai. The Laxman Jhula police have filed an FIR against the two.
However, the woman, who hails from England, left for Delhi immediately, the police said.
“We requested the woman to come here and help in the investigation. But she has declined to undergo a medical check-up and also refused to record her statement before a magistrate,” investigating officer D.S. Panwar said.
The police denied reports that the FIR was filed only after the intervention of the British High Commission.
This is the first allegation of rape by a foreigner in Rishikesh, the police said. Last year, another foreign woman had registered a case of sexual abuse against a tourist staying in a hotel room next to hers. But after interrogation, the complaint was found to be baseless.
